Unlike other birds, a hummingbird has the ability to rotate its wings in a circle. Because of this, they can fly forwards, backwards, up, down, sideways, hover in one spot, or fly upside down for short distances.  Their normal flight speed is about 25mph, but hummingbirds have been clocked at speeds in excess of 50mph during their courtship dives.
